See My Mind, Not My Wheels

Feedback

Written by one of my grade school teachers, Beverly:

"I just finished reading your book. WOW! I started reading it yesterday and finished it in two sittings. It was hard to put down. The abuse, insincerity, and irresponsibility of care givers has been an ongoing and scary problem for many years. I was horrified that a male attendant would be assigned to the personal needs of a woman-outrageous. I was struck by the powerlessness you felt and encountered throughout your life. For me, that was the most outstanding issue in the book. I always think of all able bodied people as presently or temporarily able bodied because anyone at any moment can become disabled. If more people realized that ,there would be more awareness of treating disabled people with dignity and respect. Man's inhumanity to man has always been the biggest shocks of my life no matter how limited or vast. When I was much younger I thought that people who chose human service careers would all be altruistic. When I began teaching, I saw otherwise. While there are still many caring and sincere people in this world, I think most people have their own agendas. While I was reading all the nasty things you encountered at the hands of those who were responsible for your care, I thought that you must have suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I also think that people with disabilities should have most of the control of organizations that are serving the needs of their population - just like any organization serving the interests of a specific group.   Also, there needs to be an overhaul of the caregiver profession. Are you involved in any political or social movements/organizations? Professionally speaking, I would recommend that you have the book edited. You have so much to share and a good editor would make the book more marketable for publication. It has many grammatical and spelling errors that need correction. This book would be good for people who are taking classes in learning to work with adults or children with disabilities in addition to the general population. What has been the feedback from others?"
